December is for narwhals!
Often called the unicorns of the sea, narwhals are easily recognized by their tusk, which is actually just a spiraling canine tooth. Up to 10 feet long, it’s used for sensing and can have up to 10 million nerve endings inside.
Narwhals spend their entire lives in the Arctic waters of Canada, Greenland, Norway, and Russia where they live in groups of 10 to 20 individuals and feed on halibut, cod, squid, and shrimp.
These whales are only found in the Arctic Ocean and while they’re protected throughout their range, they still face threats from pollution, climate change, and oil and gas development.
